PROBUS. WHAT IS IT?
- A Probus club is a local association of retired, semi-retired professionals, business people and others who have had some measure of responsibility in any field of worthy endeavour.
- Our club meets regularly for fellowship and an extension of their interests.
- The name is an amalgam of the abbreviation of the words professional and business. Probus is also a Latin word meaning honest or virtuous, from which the English word ‘probity’ is derived.
- Each Probus club is autonomous. There is no central organisation and each club sets its own rules. A Probus magazine, published quarterly, is the only national publication enabling clubs to communicate, share experiences and ask for or impart advice.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CLUB
- The Plymouth City Probus Club had its beginnings in two clubs, both created by members of Rotary.
- The Plymouth City Probus Club was formed in May 1983, and is men only.
- We have monthly speakers at our meetings and monthly pub lunches.
- Whilst we are constituted as a single gender [male] club, our ladies are certainly not excluded from our activities and indeed are encouraged to join our gatherings throughout the year.
- Ladies join us:
- > At selected monthly meetings where the speaker may be of wider interest and on those occasions, we extend our meeting to an informal lunch at the Club venue.
- > At our monthly pub lunches.
- > At ad-hoc social excursions held during the year.
- > At the Chairman's Annual Club Dinner and at the Christmas Lunch.
- Single gender [ladies] clubs are also available in Plymouth.
